JAMES Rolleston wants to thank the Opotiki community for its support following his July 26 car crash.
His grandmother, Christina Rolleston, said the Boy actor had visited Opotiki over Labour weekend to catch up with friends and family briefly.
“He is walking with a slight limp, but that will disappear eventually,” she said.
“James is doing a lot of swimming at the moment, to strengthen his legs.”
Mrs Rolleston said the actor’s recovery has been “absolutely rapid,” and that this was not only thanks to him being “young, determined and focused,” but she also credited community support for the near miracle.
“He wants to thank his home folks, as he calls the Opotiki community, for their support, well wishes and love,” Mrs Rolleston said.
“When you have been in an accident like this, it means a lot to have people caring for you.”
Mrs Rolleston said one of her daughters has come back from overseas to stay with James in Auckland while he is recovering.
“He is staying in the community, not in hospital,” she said.
Movie industry people in Auckland had also been a factor in the speedy recovery.
“Spending time with his work colleagues has been very good for him,” Mrs Rolleston said.
“This has been a big part of keeping him positive. He does want to get back to his career.”
Mrs Rolleston said James has learned to not take life for granted as a result of the crash.
“He is now treasuring his life and he’s making decisions that are more supportive,” she said.
“You never think these things will happen to you.”
Mrs Rolleston said she, James, and their family wanted to say a big “thank you” to all the people from across New Zealand who have sent their love and well wishes.
“You have been very supportive,” she said.
Mrs Rolleston said the remake of Goodbye Pork Pie, featuring James, is set to premiere during the first week of February next year.
“It’s an adaptation made to better suit today’s teenagers,” she said.
