THE Opotiki Volunteer Fire Brigade was called out to a gas leak at a building site in Woodlands Road at 3.30pm on Tuesday.
Senior station officer Rowan Newell said builders at the site had accidentally ruptured a low-pressure gas line while building a retaining wall.
“The presence of the gas line was not marked on the maps,” he said.
The firefighters established a 50-metere evacuation zone while waiting for the gas company to come and repair the fault.
Mr Newell said the gas workers had to come from Rotorua.
