THE division champions for the year at Opotiki Golf Club were decided on a dreary, wet, and at times uncomfortable final 36 holes on Sunday.
The exception being the men’s intermediate division final between Bain McKay and Milton Kiri, which, in contrast, was played in brighter, sunnier conditions last Thursday. Kiri won on the 35th hole, giving him both the stroke play and match play titles for the season and proving he’s the man to beat in the highly competitive division.
In the senior men’s division, a good match was in prospect with Hayden White managing to get one over Charlie Hayes, who had won the division last year.
White hits a solid ball off the tee and it was always going to take Charlie to be on top of his game to match it with the younger White.
It was White’s third senior club championship title.
The junior division for those on a 16-24 handicap between Trevor Harris and Peter Gleeson was won for the first time by Harris, completing a satisfying season for the Taihape kid as he’s known.
In the junior B division, young Jock Butler, 17, did enough to hold off Bob Papuni, 74, to claim his first club championship trophy.
The top silver division for women at the club, was won again by Tyla Kingi, who seemed to get a jump on Tegan White who was three or four down early on, making it tough to come back.
The bronze 2 winner for the women was taken out by Sue Gleeson over relative newcomer to golf Vicky Morrow, and Hayley Roache winning her match with Jascoe Ngaia to win the bronze championship contest.
