OPOTIKI Town and Country Horse Sports enjoyed a cracking opening day to the season in Opotiki on Saturday.
Riders from Opotiki, the Coast, Gisborne and Ruatoki converged on the A & P Showgrounds to test their skill levels on an obstacle course set up for the day.
From now until April, the Opotiki Town and Country Horse Sports will meet once a month for events, says Bill Peters, organiser of Saturday’s opening day.
He said the biggest event on the horse sports calendar would be the Peggy MacDonald Horse Sports on the first Saturday of March, which attracted horse sports enthusiasts from all over the country and overseas each year.
Founder Peggy was no longer alive, but she’d be proud to know the event and horse sports were still alive and well in Opotiki.
Mr Peters acknowledged the efforts of Paulie Kurei and his daughter Kimberley, along with Hape and Jo Tai for their efforts in fundraising for the opening day event, along with everyone else who offered their support.
He and wife Christina Peters are expecting up to 100 participants at the monthly events, the next one being on November 11.
