ASHBROOK School students were busy cleaning Opotiki’s river banks on Saturday.
Principal Richard Mitai said the students were based at the Te Rere marae over the weekend, preparing for the upcoming national kapa haka competition in Gisborne.
“We were cleaning the riverbanks between 10.30 and noon on Saturday,” he said.
“This was also a fundraiser for the upcoming trip and the kids are seeking sponsors.”
Having been given access to the riverbank at Otara East through farmland owned by the Gault family, the students were able to remove a lot of rubbish from that area.
“The students were divided into three groups, working in different areas,” Mr Mitai said.
“The clean-up operation went very well, but we don’t know how much money was raised as the tally is still coming in.”
