A MODEL of the famed sailing ship Cutty Sark is creating a lot of interest at the Opotiki Library.
Opotiki man Denis Lindesay said he started building the model 20 years ago.
“I love sailboats,” he said.
“I recall going to the museum as a kid to see the models, thinking it would be nice to build one.”
Now having completed that mission, Mr Lindesay said you had to spend several hours at a time when working on a model like this.
“You can’t do it in half-hour stints,” he said.
The project had been dormant for a period of seven years.
“It was in a box, but I knew I would come back to it,” Mr Lindesay said.
The original ship lies in dry dock in Greenwich, England, and Mr Lindesay said he had visited the ship.
Library manager Jo Hunt said the model would be on display at the library for about one month.
“The ship has already been creating quite a stir,” she said.
“We have had some people say they have visited the original ship.”
Mr Lindesay said he was planning to build a model of the schooner Eclipse next.
“It was the ship that brought Carl Volkner to Opotiki,” he said. “That ship was built in New Zealand.”
