A LARGE group of people turned up to help turn a bridge into a table. Photos supplied
AN oversized table was constructed with the aid of more than 25 people at Weka Wilds last Saturday.
Motu Trails executive officer Jim Robinson said the volunteers helped to prepare historic timber to build an oversized bench-table at the Pakihi Track car park.
“Volunteers removed bolts and dismantled sections of the old structure of Te Waiti bridge,” he said.
“They also started on a Pakihi Track sign from a matai timber slab.”
Mr Robinson said people had come from as far away as Auckland and that the oldest volunteer was 91 years old.
“The timber is now ready to be water-blasted, smoothed where necessary, moved on-site to the track end and assembled.”
The idea behind the project was to create a good place to relax that recalled the original bridge, from 1931.
Another community volunteer session will be publicised, probably to be held late-January 2018.
Pakihi Track is part of the Motu Trails. Weka Wilds is a Motu Trails official partner accommodation provider.
