OPOTIKI SPCA animal welfare inspector Kathleen Young has been presented with a Kiwibank Local Hero Award.
SPCA supporter Robyn Macdonald said she had nominated Mrs Young for the award and she was pleased to see the judges agreed with her.
“This work is so important but can take a real emotional toll, so it is nice to see her receive this recognition for the dedication she has shown to Opotiki and advocating for animals who have no voice,” she said.
“As Kathleen was in Australia supporting her son Mike Young in his first WRC drive at the time of the ceremony, our very dedicated staff member, Angie Beer, collected the award on her behalf at an event in Tauranga, accompanied by Neil Beer, another of our treasured volunteers.”
Mrs Young has been involved with the Opotiki SPCA since April 2015.
A fundraising garage sale will be held at the SPCA centre on Saturday [December 2], starting at 9am.
